Author bio
Terry Maggert was born in Hollywood, Florida, and grew up in South Florida, with a brief stretch in Kentucky along the way. He has also said that he spent his high school years in upstate New York, where he first got a real feel for changing seasons, a detail that sounds small until you notice how often weather, place, and atmosphere matter in his fiction.
Before writing became the main job, he tried a few other lives first. After a couple of false starts in college, he bought a bar. Later, after meeting the woman who would become his wife, he went back to school with much more purpose, earned a master's degree in history, and found his way back to writing.
Writing came back by the side door.
That background helps explain the shape of his books. There is usually a strong sense of place, a liking for people under pressure, and a habit of grounding even the wildest setup in ordinary work, loyalty, and stubbornness. In Halfway Dead, he introduces Carlie McEwan, a young witch who protects her Adirondack town while cooking at the local diner. The book has ghosts, monsters, and danger in the woods, but it also has warmth, humor, and the feeling that home is worth defending.
He shifts gears in Heartborn, a young adult fantasy about Livvy Foster and Keiron, a guardian angel from a sky-bound house at war. That series leans more romantic and mythic, but it still carries one of Maggert's favorite ideas, that broken people can still be brave, and that love often arrives tangled up with sacrifice. In Banshee, he goes bigger and stranger, with dragons rising to fight demons on a ruined Earth.
Then came the stars.
A lot of readers now know him best for science fiction, especially the collaborations with J.N. Chaney. The Messenger throws Dash Sawyer into a giant mech war after he discovers the Archetype, an ancient machine that needs a pilot. Starcaster mixes magic with space opera through Thorn Stellers and a galaxy under attack. And Backyard Starship starts with a perfect Terry Maggert premise, a man comes home to Iowa and finds out the family barn is hiding a starship, a combat AI, and a whole inherited duty he never asked for.
Across fantasy, horror, and science fiction, his stories keep circling back to found family, duty, monsters, humor, and people trying to do decent things in very messy worlds. He likes witches, dragons, haunted places, alien wars, and the sort of heroes who do not begin as heroes at all. They become them because the moment leaves them no comfortable way out.
He still teaches history when he is not writing.
He lives near Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, son, and what he has described as a herd of cats and dogs. He has also said that he grows tomato plants with suspicious enthusiasm and works on a 1967 Mustang. Pie appears often enough in his author bios that it probably counts as part of the creative process.
That mix of history teacher, monster fan, animal herder, and space-opera builder feels right once you read a few of his books. They are restless, generous stories, happy to jump from waffles to war machines, from ghosts to starships, without losing the human center.
