Series background & context
The Tempest books follow Tempest Maguire, a California surfer who has spent most of her life trying to ignore the fact that she is only half human. Her mother left for the sea years ago, and as Tempest gets closer to adulthood she can no longer avoid the question that hangs over the whole trilogy, whether she will stay on land with the life she knows or give herself over to the ocean and the world that has always been calling her.
That setup gives the series two strong lanes at once. On one side, it is a YA fantasy about mermaids, underwater kingdoms, inherited power, and an enemy who keeps pushing events toward open conflict. On the other, it is a coming-of-age story about first love, divided loyalties, and the impossible feeling that every choice costs something. Tempest is caught between her boyfriend Mark, the mysterious Kona, her family on land, and the responsibilities waiting beneath the waves.
The ocean matters here, not just as scenery but as pressure. The farther Tempest moves into Coral Straits and its politics, the less simple her old life becomes. If you like supernatural YA with strong romantic tension, a beach-to-kingdom setting, and a heroine forced to grow up very quickly, this trilogy has a classic early 2010s fantasy feel in a very readable package.
