Series background & context
Target: Timberline is built around a small town that never got over a terrible crime. Decades before the series begins, children vanished in a case that scarred Timberline and kept shaping the town long after the headlines faded.
Every book circles back to that wound in some way. Different couples take center stage, but the old kidnapping case, local memory, and the tension between what people believe and what actually happened all keep surfacing. That gives the series a strong small-town-cold-case feel.
The setting matters here. Timberline feels closed in by weather, history, and gossip. Characters return home, run into people they once loved, and find that the past is not content to stay buried. There are sheriffs, soldiers, DEA agents, and civilians who all end up caught in the same emotional weather system.
Ericson also uses the broader community well. Reservation ties, town politics, family history, and old suspicion all feed the suspense. So even though each romance is separate, the series feels connected.
