Supernaturalette is one of Katie May's strangest and funniest ideas. The starting point is basically a supernatural version of a reality dating show, with one heroine and a huge lineup of bizarre, damaged, and very memorable contestants competing for her hand. The heroine, Ridley, is not walking into some polished fairy tale. She is stepping into chaos.

That chaos is the point.

The early fun comes from the parade of supernatural men. Trees, wendigos, vampires, demons, and all sorts of magical oddballs pass through the show, and the books enjoy the absurdity of trying to make romance-competition rules work in a world full of creatures who should not be in one mansion together. Ridley herself helps sell the joke because she is messy, funny, and very aware that this is all ridiculous.

But the series is not only a parody.

Under the dates, eliminations, and public spectacle, there is a real mystery running. Murders keep intruding on the show, hidden histories start surfacing, and Ridley's own past turns out to matter more than the format suggests. That gives the series enough plot to keep it from becoming a one-note gag. The romance develops in pieces while the danger keeps getting closer.

Another neat part of the original concept is that it was built in a serial style, with reader involvement helping shape eliminations and dates. You can still feel that in the structure. Each installment moves like an episode, with little cliffhangers, sharp pivots, and new information dropping at the exact moment things should have stayed simple.

So, if you want a Katie May series that leans the hardest into comedy without giving up paranormal suspense, Supernaturalette is a good pick. It is weird on purpose, full of personality, and much more murdery than the title first suggests.
