Series background & context

Darkest Flames starts with one bad decision and then refuses to calm down. Katrina means to cast a love spell. Instead, she summons demons. Not metaphorical ones, either. Real demons, powerful and possessive, who are suddenly in her life and absolutely unwilling to leave.

That gives the series a more playful opening than some of Katie May's darker work, but it does not stay light for long.

The tension comes from the push and pull between chaos and fate. Katrina does not want her life overturned. The demons are not interested in giving her the choice to keep things tidy. As secrets come out, it becomes clear that the connection between Katrina and these men is bigger than one accidental summoning. Mate bonds, supernatural obligations, and the larger machinery of Heaven and Hell all start pressing in.

One nice thing about this series is how personal the stakes stay even when the mythology expands. Katrina is not trying to save the world right away. She is trying to understand what happened to her life, what these demons mean to her, and how to protect the people she cares about while supernatural forces crowd closer. That keeps the books feeling immediate.

There is still plenty of action. Brothers get taken. Enemies move. Old rules stop applying. The demons are not the sort of characters who handle a problem with restraint, so the books have a sharp, aggressive energy whenever the group is threatened.

Overall, Darkest Flames is a demon romance series that balances snark, heat, and supernatural chaos. If you like accidental magic, fated bonds, and a heroine who finds herself at the center of something far more dangerous than a simple crush, this one lands nicely.
