Series background & context

Beyond The Shadows is one of Katie May's creepier setups. The heroine, Camilla, has carried one strange story with her since childhood: when she was found alone and feral in the woods, she claimed a Shadow Man had kept her alive. Most people treat that as the sort of story a traumatized child tells. The books do not.

When Camilla moves to a new town and into a house rumored to be a gateway to hell, the old fear comes rushing back. Strange things happen almost immediately. People who hurt her start dying. Ghost stories stop feeling like rumors. And the Shadow Man, who once felt half-imagined, begins to look very real.

That is the series in a nutshell, haunted and personal.

What makes these books work is the mix of high school drama with genuine paranormal menace. Camilla is dealing with betrayal, rumors, gangs, complicated feelings, and a shifting group of boys who each pull her in different directions. At the same time, she is being dragged into a deeper horror story that touches her missing memories, her family, and the true nature of the house she lives in.

The love interests matter because they come from different corners of her life. Some are tied to the supernatural side of the plot, some to the town's violence and gang tension, and some to the fragile hope that Camilla could still have a normal relationship if the dead would leave her alone. That mix keeps the emotional side busy without taking away from the mystery.

Across the trilogy, the focus stays on memory, possession, belonging, and the dangerous pull of going back to what made you. The Shadow Man is not just a villain floating around the edges. He is tied to Camilla's identity, which is why the books feel more unsettling than a simple haunted-house story.

Expect a young adult paranormal romance with horror flavor, strong atmosphere, and a heroine trying to figure out whether the thing haunting her has been protecting her all along, or preparing to claim her.
