Series background & context

The Damning is Katie May in full dark-fantasy mode. The world is ruled by Nightmares, supernatural beings descended from the seven deadly sins, and humans survive under them by fighting, hiding, or dying. The heroine, Zara, starts the series as an assassin working for the resistance. She is sharp, angry, practical, and very used to killing first and dealing with feelings later.

Then she gets dragged into the Damning itself, a brutal competition built around violence, spectacle, and survival.

That is where the series really comes alive. Zara is forced into close quarters with seven princes tied to the sins, men who should be her enemies and targets. Instead, they become the center of the romantic tension and one of the story's biggest complications. The books lean hard into dangerous attraction. Nobody is safe, nobody is simple, and everyone has a reason to lie.

But the romance is only one part of the setup. The larger plot is about power. Each book pushes Zara deeper into supernatural politics, deadly tasks, old betrayals, and the growing possibility that the whole world order can be broken. Missions become trials, trials become wars, and the series keeps raising the question of whether Zara can destroy the system without becoming part of it.

The seven princes help give the books their shape. Each one brings a different temperament and a different kingdom, so the series never feels stuck in one setting. You move through courts, hunts, poison, prophecy, and resistance planning while the relationships keep getting messier and more emotionally loaded.

There is a lot of action here.

If you want a Katie May series with the biggest fantasy canvas, this is a strong place to land. The Damning offers a grim world, a mouthy assassin heroine, seven deadly men, and a plot that keeps shifting from tournament survival to rebellion, revenge, and the fight over who gets to rule what comes next.
