Strangely Beautiful Books in Order

The Strangely Beautiful books are the core of Hieber's Gothic gaslamp fantasy world. This is the series where many of her biggest interests first lock together: ghosts, mythology, found family, romance, and the feeling that history is crowded with forces most people refuse to see. The setting moves across decades and countries, but the emotional center is always the same. Ordinary lives are being shaped by very old battles, and love does not make those battles smaller. It makes them more costly.

The main branch of the story begins with Percy Parker in Victorian London. Percy is unusual from the first page, with her white hair, pale coloring, and ability to see and speak with ghosts. When she arrives at Athens Academy, she discovers that the school is really the seat of the Guard, an ancient order charged with fighting evil. In Strangely Beautiful, which gathers the first two Percy books into one revised volume, Hieber gives readers secret histories, romantic tension, and a version of Jack the Ripper that turns out to be part of a much larger supernatural threat.

These books think on a grand scale.

But they do not lose sight of people. Percy is not just a chosen figure in a prophecy machine. She is lonely, curious, guarded, and learning how much of herself she has been forced to hide. Around her is a full cast of Guard members, most notably Alexi Rychman, whose intensity gives the early books much of their emotional charge. The Guard are gifted, but they are not untouchable. They fall in love, make bad calls, doubt themselves, and carry the weight of old expectations.

The prequel, Perilous Prophecy, reaches back to 1860s Cairo and shows an earlier generation of the Guard. That book broadens the world nicely. Instead of feeling like a side note, it reveals how long this struggle has been going on and how many cultures, histories, and faiths it touches. A Christmas Carroll takes a smaller, more intimate turn, following Headmistress Rebecca Thompson and Vicar Michael Carroll through a spirit-shaped second-chance romance. Then Miss Violet and the Great War pushes forward to World War I and follows Violet Rychman as inherited gifts and global catastrophe collide.

The dead are everywhere in this series, but so is devotion.

That may be the best way to describe its tone. Strangely Beautiful is romantic without being soft, mythic without becoming distant, and full of supernatural spectacle without forgetting grief. Hieber likes hidden orders, whispered prophecies, and underworld struggle, but she grounds all of it in relationships. Friends matter. Teachers matter. Lovers matter. So do the ghosts who keep turning up because history is not finished yet.

If you like your fantasy with gaslight, longing, old-world mysticism, and a strong sense of emotional fate, this series is likely the best introduction to what Hieber does. It is sweeping, sometimes intense, and very comfortable mixing tenderness with darkness. For many readers, this is the world that defines her.
