Tough Choices

by Linda Byler

2025

In the final Stepping Stones novel, Mary enters marriage and motherhood still unsure how to hear God’s voice apart from her father’s. As she raises her daughter, she struggles to break old patterns, finding new ways to love, discipline, and trust that do not repeat past hurts.

Series background & context

The Stepping Stones series centers on Mary, a young Amish woman with copper red hair, a sharp mind, and a restless spirit. Growing up in a very conservative community in western New York, she feels like an outsider almost from the start. These books track her long journey toward understanding God, herself, and where she belongs.

In Who Is Mary?, she is a single woman who finds hymn singings and youth gatherings dull and stifling. None of the local young men interest her, and her questions about faith and life often collide with her father’s strict views. When an aunt from Lancaster County visits and offers Mary a chance to help run a busy bakery there, Mary glimpses a different possible future.

Her parents, especially her father, are terrified of what a move to a larger, more worldly Amish settlement might mean. They forbid her to go, convinced that leaving their small district will lead her away from God. Mary is left in deep turmoil, torn between honoring her parents’ wishes and answering what feels like a call to step into her own life.

A Place to Call Home finds Mary later, running a bakery in Lancaster at last. She loves the work but still battles crushing anxiety and a nagging sense that she does not quite fit, even in this new setting. When news comes that her father has been injured in an accident, she returns to rural New York to care for him, plunging back into old patterns of fear, duty, and conflict.

In Tough Choices, Mary finally commits to marriage and motherhood, but the questions do not vanish. Having grown up under a heavy voice of control, she worries about passing her insecurities to her daughter. Day by day, she and her husband navigate money pressures, spiritual doubts, and extended family drama while trying to build a home that feels healthier than the ones they knew as children.

The title of the series is well chosen. Each book marks a step, sometimes halting, sometimes bold, toward greater wholeness. Mary learns to listen for God’s voice amid her father’s stern warnings, her own fears, and the sometimes conflicting counsel of friends and church leaders.

Readers who are interested in character driven stories about mental health, intergenerational patterns, and spiritual growth will find Stepping Stones especially moving. The tone is gentle but honest, showing how hard it can be to unlearn old stories about who you are, even when you are surrounded by people who love you.
