Running Around (and Such)

by Linda Byler

2010

Lizzie Glick would rather race horses than rock babies, and her temper flares faster than her prayers. As she “runs around” with friends and suitors, she struggles to see whether there is a place for a strong willed girl like her inside her Amish community.

Series background & context

Lizzie Searches for Love is the series that first introduced many readers to Linda Byler’s fiction, and it is the one most closely tied to her own life. Set in an Amish community in Pennsylvania, it follows Lizzie Glick from fiery teen years into adulthood as she tries to figure out who she is and what, exactly, she wants from love and faith.

In Running Around (and Such), Lizzie is a young woman who does not fit the tidy mold her community expects. She hates housework and babysitting, has a temper that flares hot, and loves driving fast horses. Staying Amish is important to her, yet she feels restless and wonders whether there might be more to life than chores and hymn singings.

The second book, When Strawberries Bloom, finds Lizzie reaching a long held goal: becoming a schoolteacher. Running her own classroom brings her joy and independence, but it also creates new tensions at home. Her father’s health is failing, the family farm is under strain, and Lizzie’s questions about her future with Stephen, the young man who has been hovering around her for years, only grow louder.

In Big Decisions, Lizzie finally arrives at the crossroads the whole series has been leading toward. Should she join the church, continue teaching, marry, or some combination of the three? Her concerns, dreams, and curiosity about the larger world all collide as she tries to discern what obedience looks like without losing the spark that makes her who she is.

Around the core trilogy sits a cluster of earlier books that track Lizzie through even more seasons of life: childhood, early adolescence, close friendships with sisters Emma and Mandy, courtship with Stephen, and the first years of marriage. Together they paint a long, layered portrait of a girl growing up plain in a world that is anything but simple.

What makes this series special is its candid tone. Lizzie is not a sugar coated heroine. She complains, laughs at herself, makes painful mistakes, and sometimes wants things she knows she should not. The ordinary details of farm work, school, youth gatherings, and family arguments are handled with affection but not sentimentality.

Readers who like character driven stories, a strong first person voice, and an insider’s look at Amish life will find Lizzie Searches for Love a natural starting point. It is also a good bridge into Linda Byler’s later, more complex series, since many of the themes that appear here, like independence, loyalty, and wrestling honestly with God, echo throughout her other work.
