Stephen Blackmoore is a native Angeleno whose fiction keeps finding the strange corners of Los Angeles. His novels mix crime stories, horror, urban fantasy, and dark humor, often following people who know the city well enough to understand that its worst secrets may be supernatural.
He started out publishing short fiction and poetry. His work appeared in crime and horror magazines including Needle, Plots With Guns, Spinetingler, and Thrilling Detective, giving him room to explore the hard-edged, pulpy energy that later became a big part of his novels.
His first novel, City of the Lost, arrived in 2012. It introduced Joe Sunday, a Los Angeles enforcer who is murdered, wakes up as a zombie, and gets pulled into a hunt for a talisman that could grant immortality. The book is a standalone, but it takes place in the same supernatural Los Angeles that Blackmoore would return to again and again.
A year later, Dead Things introduced Eric Carter, a necromancer who talks to ghosts and makes a living handling problems the living cannot. Carter returns to Los Angeles after his sister is murdered, and the investigation brings him into conflict with gangsters, mages, ghosts, and Santa Muerte.
That was the beginning of Blackmoore's longest-running fictional world.
The Eric Carter books, including Broken Souls, Hungry Ghosts, Fire Season, Ghost Money, Bottle Demon, Suicide Kings, Hate Machine, and Cult Classic, build on Carter's messy history and the consequences of the magic he uses. The stories are fast, violent, and often funny in a grim way. They also keep Los Angeles at the center, from its criminal underworld and neglected neighborhoods to its old myths and restless dead.
Blackmoore's other novels show how comfortable he is moving between genres. In Mythbreaker, a burned-out criminal discovers that his childhood visions connect him to gods who need their stories told. Khan of Mars heads in a very different direction, following a learned ape and a cowboy on a pulp-style adventure across a chaotic Mars.
He has also written tie-in fiction for games and television. That work includes the Wasteland 2 novella All Bad Things, the Heroes Reborn novella "Dirty Deeds," and fiction connected to the Spirit of the Century tabletop role-playing game. He later worked in game narrative design as well, bringing the same interest in character, setting, and sharp dialogue to interactive stories.
The common thread is clear. Blackmoore likes people with bad options, dangerous debts, and no easy route out.
Whether the lead is a necromancer, a zombie, a prophet, or a gorilla stranded on Mars, the pressure comes from the same place: somebody wants something badly, and the cost of getting it is usually higher than expected.
