Series background & context

The Gods & Monsters line brings myth into the modern world, but it does not treat the divine as distant or comforting. In Stephen Blackmoore's Mythbreaker, gods need believers, stories, and human attention to survive. Old deities are stranded in a present that has largely forgotten them, while newer powers connected to money, business, and technology are ready to take their place.

Blackmoore's entry follows Louie "Fitz" Fitzsimmons. Fitz has spent years trying to live with strange visions and patterns that nobody else can see. He grew up an orphan, moved into crime, and eventually decides he wants out. His plan involves stolen mob money, which would already be enough to make his life complicated.

Then the gods notice him.

Fitz is a Chronicler, someone with the power to make or break gods through the stories he tells. That ability puts him between a Hollywood gangster, an old goddess who arrives violently, an angel with an agenda, and newer gods who want the same power for themselves. Much of the tension comes from Fitz trying to keep control of his own future while every side sees him as a tool, a weapon, or a threat.

Mythbreaker works as a standalone adventure within the wider Gods & Monsters setting. Readers do not need to know every other entry before meeting Fitz. The important ideas are introduced on the page: belief has weight, gods have needs, and a person who can shape a myth is suddenly valuable to everyone with a claim on the supernatural world.

The tone is urban fantasy with a crime-story engine. There are chases, bad deals, uneasy partnerships, and plenty of danger, but the book also makes room for the strange practical problems of a world where immortals must compete for relevance. The mythology is broad rather than limited to one tradition, and the conflict is as much about power and influence as it is about magic.

Readers should expect a pressured, street-level story rather than a distant tale of ancient legend. Fitz is not a chosen hero eager for a quest. He is a man trying to get free, only to learn that his unusual gift may give him more responsibility than he ever wanted.
