Author bio
Stephanie Blackmoore grew up in Pittsburgh and later built a career that did not begin in publishing at all. Before turning to fiction, she worked as an attorney in Pittsburgh and as a librarian in Florida. Those two jobs, one built around arguments and one built around research, are a neat fit for the kind of mysteries she would eventually write.
She came to novels after real work in the world, and that gives her career a grounded feel.
Blackmoore made her fiction debut in 2016 with Engaged in Death, the first Wedding Planner Mystery. The book introduces Mallory Shepard, a woman whose broken engagement, inherited mansion, and bad timing all collide in a murder case in the small Pennsylvania town of Port Quincy. It also sets up the series' core pleasures: wedding chaos, family friction, small town gossip, and a heroine who keeps asking questions when it would be much easier not to.
The books that followed, including Murder Wears White, Murder Borrowed, Murder Blue, Gown with the Wind, Marry Christmas Murder, and Veiled in Death, keep building on that setup. Mallory turns Thistle Park into a bed-and-breakfast and wedding venue, and every event seems to come with one more secret, one more feud, and one more body than anyone ordered. Readers who like cozy mysteries usually come for the puzzles, but they also stay for the running relationships and the sense that Port Quincy is a real place with memory and grudges.
One of the nice things about Blackmoore's work is the mix. The books are cozy, but they are not flimsy. Weddings, holiday parties, antique lace, reality TV, local history, and old family arguments all get woven into the cases, which gives each book a slightly different flavor. There is humor in the setup, but the mysteries still matter, and Mallory's life keeps moving forward from book to book.
Family is a big part of the appeal. Mallory's bond with her sister Rachel gives the series warmth, and the wider circle around Thistle Park keeps the town busy and a little unruly. Blackmoore also seems to enjoy the everyday logistics of her world, from event planning headaches to renovations and community festivals, which helps the stories feel lived in instead of simply arranged around a crime.
She clearly knows that a cozy mystery works best when the setting does some of the work.
Away from the page, Blackmoore now lives in Missouri with her husband, son, and two spirited cats. She has also shared a few small personal favorites, including snow, pierogis, and black-and-yellow sports loyalties, which feels fitting for a writer with Pittsburgh roots. It is an ordinary, human kind of bio, and that same approachable feeling carries into the fiction.
If you are new to her work, Engaged in Death is the obvious place to begin. If you already like cozy series built around jobs, places, and recurring characters, her Wedding Planner books offer exactly that kind of steady pleasure. They are puzzle driven without being harsh, and full of the kind of community drama that makes readers want to spend another weekend in Port Quincy.
