Author bio
Stephanie Osborn writes science fiction, mysteries, alternate-history adventures, and nonfiction about the sciences that shape everyday life. Her books often put a practical scientific question next to a big, strange problem: a shuttle disaster that may not be an accident, a detective dropped into the wrong universe, or a covert team dealing with alien trouble.
She grew up in the country, with open space and star-filled skies close at hand. Both sets of her grandparents had farms, and that early sense of room to look up and wonder stuck with her.
Science came first in a very direct way. Osborn earned degrees in astronomy, physics, chemistry, and mathematics, then spent more than twenty years in civilian and military space work. Her career included work connected with Space Shuttle missions, the International Space Station, Spacelab operations, and astronaut training.
That experience gave her plenty of real details to draw on, but it also gave her a useful habit as a storyteller: ask how something would work, who would have to operate it, and what could go wrong.
Her first novel, Burnout: The Mystery of Space Shuttle STS-281, turns a shuttle catastrophe into a conspiracy mystery. Investigators Crash Murphy and Dr. Mike Anders find that the official explanation does not fit the evidence, and their search puts them in growing danger. The later novella The Fetish follows an object introduced in that story and looks further into its history.
Osborn also enjoys taking familiar figures somewhere unexpected. In the Displaced Detective books, physicist Dr. Skye Chadwick pulls Sherlock Holmes from an alternate Victorian reality into the modern world. Beginning with The Arrival, the series mixes espionage, science-fiction ideas, Holmes-style deduction, and the awkward business of adapting to a century he never expected to see. Sherlock Holmes and the Mummy's Curse returns to a younger Holmes and Watson for an Egyptian archaeological mystery.
Her longer-running Division One series follows Megan McAllister, known as Omega, and Agent Echo, members of a secret organization dealing with threats that ordinary authorities cannot explain. The stories move from West Texas and holiday intrigue to alien worlds, conspiracies, and missions with real personal stakes. Readers who like team-based adventure can also try Extraction Point!, her collaboration with Travis S. Taylor, which sends a government unit after a figure tied to impossible disappearances.
Osborn has written nonfiction as well, including Rock and Roll: The New Madrid Fault System, Kiss Your Ash Goodbye: The Yellowstone Supervolcano, and Incoming! The Chicxulub Impactor. The same curiosity runs through those books: start with the science, explain it clearly, and consider what it means for people.
She has lived in the Huntsville, Alabama, area and has continued to teach and talk about science through public speaking, radio, podcasts, and other outreach. The job titles are varied, but the through line is simple. She likes hard questions, practical knowledge, and a good mystery.
