Karen Osborn Books in Order

Karen Osborn was born in Chicago in 1954 and grew up in the Midwest. She studied at Hollins College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in 1979, then completed an MFA in creative writing at the University of Arkansas in 1983.

She came to fiction through poetry. Her poetry and short fiction have appeared in literary journals and magazines, and she has said that rhythm, image, and metaphor remain central to the way she writes novels. She has also moved often and spent long stretches of time in the South, experiences that helped give her books their changing regional settings.

Her first novel, Patchwork, arrived in 1991 and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Set in a South Carolina mill town, it brings together two sisters and the daughter of a third as they revisit a family history full of old hurt, guarded memories, and hard choices. Readers who like stories where several voices slowly fill in the same picture will find a natural place to begin there.

Family is the thread that runs through much of her work.

In Between Earth and Sky, Osborn moved west and back in time. The novel follows Abigail Conklin through letters to her sister after Abigail, her husband, and their children leave Virginia for New Mexico in the 1860s. A later descendant inherits the letters and follows their trail, linking two women separated by generations but drawn to the same landscape. It is a book about building a life in a difficult place, and about what families pass down without always meaning to.

The River Road takes a more contemporary, uneasy turn. Kay grows up beside brothers David and Michael, and their close childhood bond becomes a tense love triangle as they reach adulthood. After David dies in the Connecticut River, Kay is forced to revisit what happened on the bridge while his family and the town look for someone to blame. Osborn uses shifting perspectives to keep the emotional stakes close and the truth unsettled.

Place changes from book to book, but people rarely escape one another easily.

With Centerville, published in 2012, Osborn returned to the Midwest of 1967. A bomb explodes in a drugstore, and the novel follows the people left to deal with grief, fear, faith, and a suddenly changed town. The story grew in part from Osborn's own childhood memory of witnessing a bombing and the fire that followed in her small hometown. In The Music Book, published in 2020, she follows Reenie Siesel, a gifted young cellist trying to earn a place in the male-dominated world of professional classical music in the 1950s. The novel also looks back from Reenie's later life, connecting music, ambition, memory, and love.

Teaching has been a steady part of Osborn's working life. She has taught at Clemson University and the University of Kentucky, and has served as a visiting fiction writer and writer-in-residence in MFA programs. She lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with her husband and teaches fiction writing in Fairfield University's MFA program.
