Displaced Detective Books in Order

The Displaced Detective series asks a wonderfully odd question: what happens if Sherlock Holmes survives the Reichenbach Falls, then lands in a twenty-first-century world that is not his own? Stephanie Osborn answers it through Dr. Skye Chadwick, a hyperspatial physicist whose Project Tesseract can observe alternate realities.

In The Arrival, Skye sees a version of Holmes facing his expected fate with Professor Moriarty. She intervenes, and Holmes is thrown through the connection between worlds. He cannot simply go home. Instead, he has to learn new technology, new rules, and a society far removed from Victorian London, while Skye helps him find his footing.

Holmes does not stay idle for long. A possible espionage and sabotage plot puts his powers of observation to use, and Skye becomes both a scientific partner and a modern counterpart to Watson. The books combine detective work with speculative science, giving familiar Holmes habits a new setting and new complications.

The game is still afoot.

The first four books form two closely linked investigations. The Arrival and At Speed follow the fallout from Project Tesseract and a spy ring whose true goal is unclear. The Rendlesham Incident and Endings and Beginnings move into the larger mystery of a cosmological threat, with the series' scientific ideas becoming more central.

Later stories keep widening the setting. In A Case of Spontaneous Combustion, Holmes is sent to England to investigate the destruction of a village while Skye faces dangers of her own in Colorado. Fear in the French Quarter takes the Holmeses to New Orleans, where ghostly activity, disappearances, and an approaching disaster make the city more than a backdrop.

These are science-fiction mysteries first, not a strict recreation of the original Holmes canon. Osborn uses alternate universes, espionage, physics, and romance alongside the detecting. Yet the appeal remains clear: Holmes sees what others miss, and the clues have to fit.
