Steele (Simon Hawke) Books in Order

The Steele books are built on a premise pulp fiction loves because it can do almost anything with it. Donovan Steele was a homicide cop. Then he died. Then future technology rebuilt him and sent him back onto the streets of New York in a body that can take more damage than any ordinary detective and attract at least as much trouble.

That sounds like simple cyborg wish-fulfillment, but the series works because the world around Steele is just as dangerous as he is. This future city is run through with gangs, corporate interests, organized crime, political hardliners, and the kind of official corruption that makes law enforcement feel like one more faction in the war. Steele can hit harder than most people. He still cannot trust much.

That is the real conflict.

Across Steele, Cold Steele, Killer Steele, Jagged Steele, Renegade Steele, and Target Steele, Hawke and Victor Milan keep finding new ways to test the core idea. Sometimes Steele is hunting. Sometimes he is framed, hunted, or split away from the people who can still help him. Sometimes the threat is external, and sometimes it comes from the fact that a rebuilt man can be copied, manipulated, or reduced to the machinery that keeps him functioning. The books understand that once a person becomes a system, the system becomes a weakness.

They also understand pace. These novels do not linger. They run on chases, raids, ambushes, shootouts, and grim reveals, but the cybernetic angle gives the action a little extra sting. Steele is not just an action hero with metal parts. He is a dead cop being asked, over and over, to prove he is still a man and not merely equipment.
