Star Trek: Vanguard Books in Order

Vanguard is one of the most ambitious original Star Trek book projects, because it creates its own corner of the twenty-third century and then treats it like a pressure cooker. The setting is Starbase 47, usually called Vanguard, planted in the Taurus Reach on the edge of Federation space. Officially it is there for exploration and diplomacy. Unofficially, almost everyone suspects something bigger is going on.

They are right.

The station sits near Tholian, Klingon, and Orion interests, which means almost every move has political consequences. Captains, spies, reporters, diplomats, merchants, and intelligence officers all keep colliding in the same place. That gives the series a lived-in feel. It is not just a ship story. It is a frontier story, a newsroom story, an espionage story, and sometimes a war story.

Threaded through all of that is the real engine of the series, the ancient Shedai and the secrets buried in the Taurus Reach. What begins as strategic jockeying turns into something stranger and much more dangerous, with the whole region dragged into consequences no one fully understands.

The tone is busier and more serialized than television-era Original Series Trek, but that is the appeal. Vanguard rewards readers who like big casts, layered continuity, and the feeling that one remote outpost can become the hinge point for an era.
