Series background & context

A Time To... is a bridge series, set between Insurrection and Nemesis, and it makes good use of that in-between feeling. The crew of the Enterprise-E is still recognizably the movie-era TNG team, but the cracks are easier to see. Political tensions are rising, Starfleet is stretched, and the next phase of everyone's lives is getting closer.

The books work best as a long handoff.

Different authors take turns, but the shared idea is that this crew is moving through a period where every mission feels like it might be the last version of normal. David Mack's two entries sit right in that space, mixing diplomacy, border danger, and character strain.

If you want more time with the later TNG crew, and you like stories where Starfleet duty rubs against personal cost, this sequence does a good job of widening the road between the films.
