Tasked by Baba Yaga to clear an innocent witch in just seven days, Morticia juggles lethal curses, meddling supernaturals, and her inconvenient attraction to a werewolf investigator. If she fails, she'll lose the hard-won magic that finally made her whole.
Series background & context
The Stakes and Spells Mysteries follow Morticia, a midlife vampire who should know better than to snoop on witches. In Stakes and Spells, curiosity gets the better of her and she sneaks into a Halloween ritual, assuming she can watch from the shadows and slip away unseen.
The plan backfires when a witch ends up dead and her magic jumps straight into Morticia's veins. Overnight, Morticia becomes a rare vampire‑witch hybrid, complete with a clever cat familiar, a grimoire she can barely read, and a murder charge hanging over her head. The Supernatural Bureau wants someone to blame, and a vampire standing over a body with fresh witch power is an easy answer.
From there the series becomes part mystery, part workplace comedy inside supernatural bureaucracy. Morticia has to work with a prickly witch who has nothing left to lose and a werewolf Special Agent whose job is, inconveniently, to investigate her. Their cases pull them through magical jails, enchanted back alleys, and small towns designed as experiments in multi‑species coexistence.
In Spells and Fangs, Baba Yaga herself sets a seven‑day deadline to clear an innocent witch, with Morticia's new power on the line if she fails. Fangs and Cauldrons raises the stakes again when what should have been a simple date night in a town full of supernaturals ends with another murder and a tangle of motives.
The focus stays on Morticia's voice: dry, self‑aware, and determined to prove that midlife is far from the end of the story. The mysteries are fast‑paced but not grim, with room for romance, friendships, and the awkwardness of learning a whole new kind of magic after centuries of doing things one way.
Readers who enjoy snarky paranormal cozies, found family, and heroines juggling second chances with real danger will feel at home in this series.
