Series background & context
The Spellbound Falls series is Janet Chapman’s fullest dive into a world where magic, myth, and everyday life share the same lakeshore. Set in the town of Spellbound Falls, Maine, these books weave together Atlantean wizards, time-traveling Highlanders, and ordinary people trying to pay their bills and raise their kids.
It all begins with Spellbound Falls, where Maximilian Oceanus arrives in town with a newly discovered six-year-old son and a talent for attracting trouble. Mac is from the mythical island of Atlantis, and odd things happen around him—locks open without keys, seatbelts jam, and seabirds wander down the road in the middle of the night. Olivia Baldwin, a widowed manager of the Inglenook family camp, doesn’t have time for weirdness or romance, but Mac’s determination to be a good father keeps throwing them together.
In Charmed by His Love, Chapman brings in Duncan MacKeage, a Highland road builder connected to her earlier series. He’s tasked with constructing a road up the mountain to a new resort and keeping an eye on Peg Thompson, a widowed gravel-pit owner with four rambunctious children and a deep belief that she’s cursed to bring death to any man she loves. Duncan’s quiet, stubborn care and Peg’s fierce independence give the book its heart, while family curses and magical errands raise the stakes.
Courting Carolina adds a runaway princess to the mix. Carolina Oceanus, tired of being the prize in an old-fashioned marriage contest, flees her powerful father and hides in the Maine woods under the name Jane Smith. When Alec MacKeage rescues her from kidnappers and offers a temporary refuge, the line between protector and partner blurs, and both must decide how much of their true selves to reveal.
The Heart of a Hero turns to Nicholas, another Atlantean exile serving as director of security for the Nova Mare and Inglenook resorts. He keeps finding trouble-prone Julia Campbell in the middle of mysterious accidents and small disasters. As he works to keep her and her younger sister safe, Julia starts to realize this overqualified “security guy” is something far more dangerous to her carefully managed life.
Later books stretch the series in fresh directions. For the Love of Magic follows long-married couple Rana and Titus Oceanus as they weather a painful separation and confront a secret that makes demon-fighting look easy. The Highlander Next Door pairs women’s-shelter director Birch Callahan with Niall MacKeage, a cop and time-tossed Highlander who has his own reasons for understanding danger. From Kiss to Queen whisks practical Maine hunter Jane Abbott into the orbit of Prince Markov Lakeland, while Call It Magic focuses on firefighter Katy MacBain and interim chief Gunnar Wolfe as they unravel the mystery of Katy’s vanished weeks and uncanny healing gift.
Throughout the series, Spellbound Falls itself ties everything together: a town with a Bottomless Sea, misty mountains, and a knack for drawing in people who don’t quite fit anywhere else. The books balance whimsy with real emotion, making this series an inviting home base for readers who want their romance served with magic, humor, and a strong sense of place.
