Series background & context

The Pine Creek Highlanders books are where Janet Chapman first flung twelfth-century warriors into modern-day Maine and asked what would happen next. The answer turns out to be equal parts chaos, snowstorms, and unexpected love.

The series begins with Charming the Highlander, when a plane crash strands scientist Grace Sutter on an icy mountain with Greylen MacKeage, a Highland laird yanked forward in time by a meddling wizard. Grace thinks in equations and data; Greylen trusts prophecy and steel. Watching those two figure out how to survive the wilderness—and each other—sets the tone for everything that follows: smart, grounded heroines squaring off against stubborn, old-world heroes in the town of Pine Creek.

Each book picks up another warrior and another woman whose life is already complicated before a Highlander arrives. In Loving the Highlander, photographer Sadie Quill is hunting for a legendary gold vein when she stumbles on a very real, very naked Scot, Morgan MacKeage, asleep beside a mountain lake. Wedding the Highlander brings in surgeon Libby Hart, whose life detours into Pine Creek and into the orbit of Michael MacBain, a warrior trying to build a home in a century he doesn’t quite trust.

Time travel and magic run quietly under the surface. A wizened Druid, sacred mountains like TarStone, and odd occurrences at summer solstice all hint that these men are part of a larger design. Yet the books always come back to down-to-earth problems: how to raise children in a strange era, how to run a Christmas tree farm, how to blend a medieval sense of honor with a modern woman’s independence.

Later novels shift focus to the next generation. Winter MacKeage, an artist and the seventh MacKeage daughter, has to wrestle with her own magical calling while falling for the mysterious Matt Gregor in Only With a Highlander. Megan MacKeage, a scientist working in the Arctic, returns home with a broken heart and secrets of her own in Secrets of the Highlander. A Highlander Christmas and Highlander for the Holidays tie the clan’s story into festive, emotionally rich winter tales that still carry the weight of old prophecies.

Across the series you’ll see familiar faces circling back in and out of town, friendships deepening, and the MacKeage and MacBain clans slowly putting down roots in Pine Creek. The books stand alone as romances but reward being read in order, especially as they lead into Chapman’s spinoff magical series, Midnight Bay and Spellbound Falls. If you like your Highlanders with snow, family dinners, and a dash of druidic trouble, this is the place to start.
