Series background & context
The Midnight Bay trilogy is where Janet Chapman lets the paranormal side of her Highlander universe run wild. Set in a small coastal Maine town, the series follows men who were once trapped in animal forms and are now struggling to live—and love—as human again.
Everything starts with Moonlight Warrior. Kenzie Gregor, an immortal warrior who spent centuries cursed as a panther, arrives in Midnight Bay to help other displaced souls. The town’s diner owner, Eve Anderson, is trying to keep herself and her ailing mother afloat, and she has no patience for a mysterious stranger who insists on rescuing her. But odd weather, eerie sightings, and Kenzie’s uncanny instincts make it clear that something otherworldly has followed him into town, and Eve has to decide whether to trust the man she’s certain is hiding more than a checkered past.
Dragon Warrior moves the spotlight to William Kilkenny, a ninth-century Irish nobleman who has been freed from a dragon’s body and dropped into modern life with very little filter. Maddy Kimble is a nurse and single mother balancing a nursing home full of opinionated elders, a shy daughter, a widowed mother, and a rebellious teenage brother. She has no time for courtship, especially from a blunt, barefoot giant who doesn’t understand contemporary manners. As strange events multiply around them, Maddy begins to suspect the man crashing into her world isn’t just a pushy suitor.
The trilogy concludes with Mystical Warrior, featuring Fiona Gregor, who has only recently stopped being a red‑tailed hawk. Human again and fragile from centuries of trauma, she rents the apartment above contractor Trace Huntsman’s house. Trace likes his life quiet, predictable, and firmly free of magic, but Fiona’s presence—and the return of the wizard Maximilian Oceanus—pull him into a brewing battle that threatens both Midnight Bay and the people he’s come to care about.
Across all three books, Midnight Bay itself feels like a character: foggy, salt-streaked, and full of townspeople who take odd happenings in stride. Chapman balances darker elements—demons, curses, and ancient enemies—with wry humor, nosy neighbors, and the daily grind of work and family.
Readers who love the Highlander series will spot familiar names and a shared magical framework, while newcomers can enjoy Midnight Bay as a self-contained blend of paranormal romance, second chances, and small-town charm. It’s a great bridge between the time-traveling Scots of Pine Creek and the Atlantis-tinged magic of Spellbound Falls.
