The Seductive Impostor

by Janet Chapman

Series background & context

The Puffin Harbor books trade time travel and wizards for crashing surf, family secrets, and a pair of strong-willed sisters on Maine’s rocky coast. The tone is more romantic suspense than paranormal, but you can still feel Janet Chapman’s fondness for small towns and complicated families on every page.

The series centers on Rachel and Willow Foster, daughters of a local builder who once poured his skill into an imposing cliffside mansion called Sub Rosa. That house is both a landmark and a wound in Puffin Harbor’s history, tied to a tragedy the town still whispers about. Rachel, who helped her father build it, would be happiest if the whole place slid into the sea.

In The Seductive Impostor, Sub Rosa gets a new owner: Keenan Oakes, a man with money, patience, and his own reasons for reopening a house that many locals consider cursed. As Keenan settles in, odd accidents and unnerving discoveries begin to stack up, forcing Rachel to confront the shadow hanging over her family name. Their romance unfolds against a backdrop of locked rooms, cliffside storms, and a tight-knit community that always seems to be watching.

The Dangerous Protector shifts the focus to younger sister Willow, an attorney and environmental watchdog who spends her time defending Maine’s coastline. She returns to Puffin Harbor to investigate a disturbing lobster catch and the possibility of contamination offshore. Waiting there is Duncan Ross, the Scottish pub owner she once treated as a fling and now does her best to avoid. Unfortunately for Willow’s resolve, Duncan has the patience of a man who pours his own pints and a knack for being right where trouble lands.

Together, the two books sketch a harbor town built on fishing, gossip, and old loyalties. You’ll meet lobstermen, pub regulars, and neighbors who might know more than they say about what’s happening in the coves and tidal inlets. Chapman leans into coastal atmosphere—fog, steep paths, creaking docks—without letting the suspense turn bleak.

If you like romantic mysteries where the danger grows from very human greed and guilt, Puffin Harbor is a great stop between her magical Highlander novels and her more purely contemporary family series. The stories are closely linked, so reading them in order lets you follow both the sisters’ journeys and the slow unravelling of Sub Rosa’s long-held secrets.
