Series background & context
Southern Arcana is one of the earliest series written by Donna Herren and Bree Bridges under the Moira Rogers name. These are novel-length paranormal romances set in a contemporary South where shapeshifters, psychics, witches, and other supernatural people must keep their existence hidden.
New Orleans is a key part of the atmosphere. Its neighborhoods, old power structures, and uneasy alliances give the stories a lived-in setting, while supernatural politics make every personal choice more complicated. The hidden world is not presented as glamorous. It is crowded with people fighting for safety, status, and the right to decide their own futures.
Crux begins the series with a psychic heroine and a shapeshifter hero drawn into a conflict that forces them to trust one another. Crossroads widens the cast and the political stakes. From there, Deadlock, Cipher, Impulse, and Enigma follow other couples while continuing the larger struggle among supernatural factions.
Romance remains the anchor, but each book carries real external pressure. Characters deal with threats from rival groups, family expectations, old violence, magical danger, and the costs of keeping secrets. The series also gives ongoing supporting characters time to develop, so earlier events and relationships matter as the books continue.
This is paranormal romance with action, explicit sexual content, and occasional violence. The emotional focus tends to be on people learning whom they can rely on when their own community is divided.
Start with Crux. Although later novels have their own central couples, the world-building and long-running political conflicts build most clearly in order. Readers who enjoy a broad paranormal cast, city settings, and romances with danger around the edges will find the strongest experience by continuing straight through to Enigma.
