Series background & context
The Beyond series takes place in a United States changed by devastating solar storms. Eden, the country's only self-sustaining city, is run by wealthy people who demand strict obedience from everyone inside its walls. Those who do not fit are exiled to the sectors outside, where resources are scarce, gangs hold power, and survival usually comes before comfort.
Sector Four belongs to Dallas O'Kane and the people who choose to stand with him. The O'Kanes make bootleg liquor, fight when they have to, and protect their own with a fierce kind of loyalty. They are not simple heroes, and the world around them is not safe. But the series keeps returning to a hopeful question: what might happen if people who have been used, abandoned, or controlled get to build a family on their own terms?
Each main novel centers on a different romance, while the larger struggle between Eden and the sectors keeps moving in the background. The cast grows over time, bringing in exiles, fighters, spies, artists, healers, former elites, and people whose loyalties are never as simple as they first appear. Relationships can be intense, unconventional, and openly sexual, with consent, trust, and chosen family doing much of the emotional work.
This is a high-heat post-apocalyptic romance series with violence, political conflict, and a large continuing ensemble.
Start with Beyond Shame, which introduces Eden, Sector Four, and the O'Kanes through Noelle and Jasper. The core novels work best in publication order. The novellas add useful character moments, but readers who prefer to stick to the longer books can still follow the main story. Beyond Doubt and Beyond Forever are better saved for after the original series, since they revisit established characters and reveal major outcomes.
The wider Sectors setting continues in Gideon's Riders and Mercenary Librarians, though both have new leads and can be read separately.
