Series background & context

Soul Bound is a compact fantasy duology set in Senkar, the same wider world used in Through the Fire. It begins with two women who have every reason to be guarded. Xandra is an acerbic mage who has spent more than a millennium trapped in the hells. Jasmine is a priestess connected to a god of light. Their meeting changes the direction of both their lives.

They do not start from an easy place.

Xandra has survived a long, awful existence and has little patience left for most people. Jasmine brings a very different outlook, but she is not simply there to soften Xandra's edges. Both characters have beliefs, loyalties, and wounds that shape what they are willing to risk. Their relationship grows through shared danger and the slow work of learning whether another person can be trusted.

The series uses a classic portal-between-realms setup, but keeps the focus close to its central pair. The hells are not just a backdrop for monsters and spectacle. They are part of the damage Xandra carries with her, and part of the challenge facing both women as they try to find a life beyond what was done to them.

Dusk Gate introduces the escape, the immediate consequences, and the uneasy bond between Xandra and Jasmine. Phoenix Ascendant continues their journey as the stakes widen and they confront dangers that cannot be solved merely by running away. The books are shorter than several of Medrano's other series, which makes the duology a useful entry point for readers who want a complete fantasy arc without a long commitment.

Romance matters here, but so do survival, faith, and the question of whether people can become more than the roles imposed on them. Xandra's sharp voice gives the story some bite, while Jasmine adds a counterweight that keeps the partnership from becoming predictable.

The tone is adventurous and at times dark, with magical travel, otherworldly settings, and a relationship that develops under pressure. Readers familiar with Senkar may enjoy the shared setting, but no prior reading is required.

Start with Dusk Gate and continue directly to Phoenix Ascendant.
