Something Fabulous Books in Order

Start with Something Fabulous, then keep going through Something Spectacular and Something Extraordinary. Taken together, these books are a run of queer Regency romcoms full of runaway plans, bruised feelings, bad timing, excellent clothes, and people who are much more dramatic than they would ever admit.

The first book sets the tone. Valentine Layton, Duke of Malvern, is supposed to marry Arabella Tarleton, who promptly bolts because she wants love, not a sensible arrangement. Her twin brother Bonny decides it is now his job to help, interfere, narrate, overreact, and make everything far messier. What follows is part road trip, part comedy of manners, and part love story between people who did not expect to be the ones falling.

Everybody in this corner of Alexis Hall's world has feelings at full volume.

The later books keep the same energy while shifting focus. Something Spectacular follows Peggy Delancey and the opera singer Orfeo, turning unrequited longing into something warmer and stranger. Something Extraordinary brings Arabella back to center stage as she and Sir Horley race away from disastrous marriages and toward a future that might suit them better. Characters and jokes carry over, so the books feel linked even when the central romance changes.

Setting matters here. These stories use Regency England, but not in a stiff, museum-piece way. There are ballrooms, coaching inns, drawing rooms, opera houses, duels, kidnappings, and frantic journeys to Gretna Green. Hall plays with familiar historical romance machinery, then loosens it up so queer characters can take up more space, make more noise, and ask for better endings.

If you like historical romance that is funny first, romantic second, and never afraid of a little chaos, this series is a good bet. The stakes are real, reputation, money, safety, loneliness, but the books stay light on their feet. Expect banter, near disasters, found family, and the kind of happy ending that only arrives after everybody has made life much harder than it needed to be.
