The series is set in London and follows Kate Kane, a hard-drinking private investigator who also happens to be half faery, chronically unlucky in love, and forever one terrible choice away from making her life even worse.

From the first book, Iron & Velvet, Kate is already tangled up in trouble. She has a dead former partner, a talent for irritating dangerous people, and a history with the city's supernatural set that keeps coming back to bite her. The cases begin as mysteries, dead werewolves, vampire courts, magical objects, but they keep opening onto something bigger, with old grudges, hidden powers, and conspiracies that stretch across the whole series.

Kate is a disaster, and that is exactly why she works.

One of the pleasures here is the setting. Hall's London is full of werewolves, vampires, mages, demons, faeries, and old institutions that are somehow both grand and grubby. It feels lived in, dangerous, and weirdly funny. Kate moves through that world with a detective's eye and a survivor's instincts, which means she notices the glamour and the rot at the same time.

The books really do work best in order: Iron & Velvet, Shadows & Dreams, Fire & Water, and Smoke & Ashes. The emotional relationships carry forward, the magical politics keep building, and Kate's personal wreckage becomes part of the ongoing plot. Along the way you get vampire aristocrats, supernatural wars, enchanted artifacts, exes who should stay exes, and the constant possibility that the next clue will also try to kill her.

If you want something snarky, sexy, and unapologetically chaotic, this is a good series to pick up. Hall keeps the pace brisk, but there is real weight beneath the one-liners. Kate's messiness is not just a bit. It shapes how she fights, loves, drinks, and survives. That gives the series a sharper edge than a lot of lighter paranormal detective fiction.
