Sime-Gen Books in Order

The Sime~Gen series is a long-running science fiction world created by Jacqueline Lichtenberg, with Jean Lorrah as one of its key collaborators. It begins with a brutal biological divide. In the future, humans become either Gens, who produce a life energy called selyn, or Simes, who need that energy to survive.

For most Simes, taking selyn from a Gen is fatal to the Gen. That fact shapes every part of society.

The world is divided by fear, habit, and survival. In some places, Gens are treated as a source of food rather than as people. In others, a child who changes into a Sime is seen as a danger. Then comes the possibility of a different path: Channels, rare Simes who can take selyn safely and pass it on to other Simes. Their existence makes peaceful cooperation possible, but it does not make it easy.

Lorrah's first major Sime~Gen novel, First Channel, follows Rimon Farris and Kadi Morcot, childhood sweethearts separated by what they become at puberty. Their refusal to accept the old rules helps launch a new kind of community. Channel's Destiny moves to the next generation, as Zeth Farris faces the political and social consequences of that experiment when violence threatens to return.

The series does not stay with one cast or one era. Ambrov Keon tells a more intimate story about a Sime in desperate need and a Gen who may be able to change what survival means. Zelerod's Doom brings the focus back to the wider political crisis, as different factions struggle over whether cooperation can last. Later Lorrah books, including To Kiss or to Kill and The Story Untold and Other Sime~Gen Stories, show other corners of the same society.

At heart, these are stories about dependency, consent, prejudice, and the hard work of building institutions people can trust. The premise can sound dark, and it is. But the books are not only about danger. They are also about people finding ways to care for each other when the world has taught them that fear is normal.

The reading order can look complicated because the books were published over many years and cover different points in the internal timeline. For a Jean Lorrah-focused path, start with First Channel, continue with Channel's Destiny, then try Ambrov Keon and Zelerod's Doom. That route introduces the core ideas through personal stories before moving toward the broader political stakes.
