Author bio
Jean Lorrah is an American science fiction and fantasy writer whose career grew out of two places that shaped a lot of her work: the college classroom and the early Star Trek fan community.
Born in 1940, Lorrah built a life around language, teaching, and imaginative fiction. She earned a Ph.D. from Florida State University, then joined the English faculty at Murray State University in Kentucky in 1968. She taught there for nearly four decades, until 2007, working with students while also writing novels, stories, essays, and collaborative projects.
Her route into professional fiction started with fandom. In the 1970s, she wrote Star Trek fan fiction, including The Night of the Twin Moons and the story collection Full Moon Rising, both centered on Sarek and Amanda Grayson. That work gave her room to explore character relationships and alien cultures long before she began writing licensed Star Trek novels.
Then a convention connection changed the direction of her writing life.
Jacqueline Lichtenberg invited Lorrah to collaborate in the Sime~Gen universe, and their first novel together, First Channel, appeared in 1980. The series imagines a future in which humanity has split into Simes, who need life energy called selyn, and Gens, who produce it. Lorrah's books in that setting, including Channel's Destiny, Ambrov Keon, and Zelerod's Doom, focus on people trying to build trust across a divide that has been violent for generations.
Those stories are interested in systems, but they stay close to the people caught inside them. Characters have to negotiate love, fear, duty, prejudice, and the practical question of how to survive together. Lorrah later returned to the setting through work such as To Kiss or to Kill, The Story Untold and Other Sime~Gen Stories, and the Clear Spring Chronicles collaboration A Change of Tactics.
She also created the fantasy series Savage Empire. It begins with a clash between the Aventine Empire, where telepathic Readers hold an uneasy place in society, and the neighboring lands ruled by magically gifted Adepts. Savage Empire, Dragon Lord of the Savage Empire, and Captives of the Savage Empire use that conflict to ask who gets called civilized, who gets treated as dangerous, and whether peace can be built after war.
Lorrah came back to Star Trek as a professional novelist with The Vulcan Academy Murders and The IDIC Epidemic, two Original Series mysteries with Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and a close look at Vulcan life. Her Next Generation novels, Survivors and Metamorphosis, give substantial attention to Tasha Yar and Data, two characters whose pasts and hopes leave plenty of room for difficult choices.
She wrote for younger readers, too. With Lois Wickstrom, Lorrah created the Nessie books, beginning with Nessie and the Living Stone. These Loch Ness adventures follow children who find themselves protecting Nessie and her hidden underwater world. Her standalone Blood Will Tell moves in a very different direction, pairing a Kentucky detective with a strange death and a vampire mystery.
Collaboration is a real thread through Lorrah's bibliography.
Across fantasy, science fiction, children's adventures, and Star Trek, she keeps returning to people who begin on opposite sides of a problem and have to find a way through it together. That makes her books a good fit for readers who like speculative ideas, but want those ideas attached to relationships, hard decisions, and characters trying to make a damaged world more livable.
