Author bio
Candace Havens is a Texas writer who came to fiction through journalism, deadlines, and a lot of curiosity about how stories work. She studied at Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, then earned a journalism degree from the University of North Texas.
Before many readers knew her from paranormal romance or cozy mystery shelves, she was already writing for a living. Havens built a long career in entertainment journalism, interviewing actors, filmmakers, and television creators by the thousands. She also wrote widely syndicated entertainment columns, worked on radio film reviews in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and spent years moving between pop culture coverage and publishing.
That background matters.
Her fiction is usually fast on the takeoff, clean in its setup, and full of people who have jobs, secrets, and not much time to waste. The women at the center of her books tend to be smart, capable, and a little stubborn, which is usually exactly what the story needs.
Her early paranormal romance and urban fantasy books made that clear. In Charmed & Dangerous, The Demon King and I, and Dragons Prefer Blondes, she writes heroines who can deal with witches, demons, dragons, and world-ending trouble without losing their sense of humor. Readers who like sharp banter, supernatural mess, and women who fight back usually find a lot to enjoy there.
She has also written romantic suspense, including the Stonegate books that begin with Take Me If You Dare. Those stories mix investigators, spies, cold cases, and strong attraction under pressure. On another shelf entirely, books like Christmas at Holiday Peak and Bet Me to Stay show her small-town contemporary side, where family history, second chances, and community ties sit right beside the romance.
Havens has never stayed in one lane for long. She wrote the nonfiction biography Joss Whedon and contributed to anthologies, all while continuing her journalism career. Her work has picked up nominations from the RITA, Holt Medallion, Write Touch Reader Awards, and National Readers Choice Awards, and she is also a Barbara Wilson Award winner.
She has stayed close to the writing community, too. Havens has taught classes and run a free online workshop for thousands of writers, which fits the practical, working-author feel that runs through her career. She also served as a former president of the Television Critics Association, another sign of how closely her book life and media life have overlapped.
Then came the cozies. With A Case for the Winemaker, Havens launched the Ainsley McGregor mysteries, set in Sweet River, Texas, where an artisan market, local festivals, and a body-finding Great Dane named George Clooney keep the series lively. Those books found enough of an audience to inspire the Ainsley McGregor Mysteries screen adaptations.
She now also writes mysteries as Lucy Connelly, including An American in Scotland, An Irish Bookshop Murder, and The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor. The name changes, but some favorite Havens ingredients stay put: energetic pacing, warm communities, a little danger, and heroines who would really like a quiet life but do not seem destined to get one.
Across romance, paranormal fiction, suspense, and mystery, the through line is simple. Havens likes stories that move, characters who can handle themselves, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting. Her recent author notes still circle back to the same off-page comforts too, travel when she can get it, and home, dogs, and family when she can't.
