Author bio
Rachel Caine was the pen name of Roxanne Longstreet Conrad, a writer who moved easily between horror, fantasy, science fiction, and thrillers without ever sounding like she was forcing the switch. She was born on April 27, 1962, at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, and grew up in West Texas, which stayed in her work. Even when the setting turned supernatural, there was often a practical, lived-in feeling underneath it.
Before books took over, she studied accounting at Texas Tech University and spent years working outside publishing. She was also a professional musician and, at different points, performed with Henry Mancini, Peter Nero, and John Williams. That mix of day-job structure and performance-world energy fits her fiction pretty well. The books move fast, but they are built with a working person's sense of consequence.
She didn't stay in one lane.
Caine started publishing in the 1990s, first under names including Roxanne Longstreet and Roxanne Conrad, before Rachel Caine became the name most readers knew. Early books like The Undead, Copper Moon, and Exile, Texas already showed interests she kept returning to: ordinary people shoved into danger, hidden systems of power, and characters who had to improvise their way through fear instead of waiting to feel ready.
A lot of readers met her through Glass Houses, the opening book in the Morganville Vampires series. Claire Danvers arrives in a Texas college town ruled by vampires, and what makes the series work is not just the premise. It is the group chemistry, the strange town politics, and the feeling that being smart is useful, but never enough on its own. Later, with Ill Wind and the Weather Warden books, Caine leaned harder into high-speed urban fantasy, giving readers magical storms, Djinn politics, and a heroine who often had to make decisions before she had time to be frightened.
Then she kept changing gears. Ink and Bone opens the Great Library series in an alternate world where the Library of Alexandria survived and private ownership of books is illegal, while Stillhouse Lake turns to adult suspense and follows Gwen Proctor, a woman rebuilding her life after learning her husband was a serial killer. Those books are very different on the surface, but they share a Rachel Caine strength: capable people under pressure, messy trust, and danger that feels social as well as physical.
She was especially good at writing people who had to function while scared.
That is true whether the story involved vampires, sentient ships, storms, or internet mobs. Her protagonists are often clever but not polished, brave but not fearless, and surrounded by systems that are bigger than they are. Found family matters in her work. So does the question of what survival costs, and what it takes to keep your humanity when the world keeps asking you to harden.
Caine lived for much of her adult life in Texas with her husband, artist R. Cat Conrad, and she was a regular presence at conventions and reader events. In 2010, after years of balancing writing with corporate communications work, she began writing full time. That late-career jump says a lot about her. So does the size of the bibliography that followed.
She died on November 1, 2020, after a battle with soft tissue sarcoma. But the books are still easy to hand to new readers because they know exactly what kind of promise they are making: sharp hooks, real momentum, and people worth following into trouble.
