Series background & context
The Sicilian Mafia books center on Clara and Luca, and they announce their tone almost immediately. Clara is not waiting around to be rescued. She is the part-owner of a brothel called the Castle, she knows how to run it, and she has built her own world inside it. Then Luca Belatoni walks in, demands protection money, and decides he wants control of much more than her business. That collision powers the whole series.
What follows is a mafia romance, but not one that forgets to let the heroine push back. Clara and Luca spend a lot of time testing each other, fighting, negotiating, and refusing to be easy for one another. Luca is controlling, possessive, and dangerous in exactly the way the series promises. Clara is stubborn enough to make every victory costly. That gives the books a brash, argumentative energy instead of a purely gloomy one.
The Castle matters as more than a backdrop. It is Clara's turf, her livelihood, and the place where business, sex, and power keep crashing together. Once Luca forces himself into that space, the story stops being a simple enemies-to-lovers setup and becomes a question of territory, family pressure, and who gets to decide the rules. The mafia angle grows larger as the books go on, especially when Luca's private life and Sicilian ties start demanding a say.
These books run on pure stubbornness.
The first novel, Luca (You Will Be Mine), is the hard clash, Clara's independence versus Luca's need to dominate, with captivity and forced proximity doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Luca (Because You're Mine) picks up right where the first book leaves off and throws fresh pain into the mix. Old loyalties, family complications, and a brutal secret make the couple's path much rougher than a simple happily-ever-after sprint.
Readers coming to this series should expect heat, danger, jealousy, and a lot of emotional noise. There is humor in the banter, but the stakes are still high, because mafia business is never far from the romance. Roberts uses that pressure to ask how love works when possession, protection, and control all start to sound alike. If you like contemporary mafia stories with a combative heroine, a forceful hero, and a relationship that feels like a power struggle from the first chapter, this is the lane these books stay in.
