Author bio
Jaimie Roberts was born in London and moved to Gibraltar in 2001. She has said she felt more at home there than she ever did in London, which is a quietly funny detail when you think about how stormy her books can get. She is married and has two sons, and family life has sat alongside her writing career from the start.
Writing was not a late idea for her. She has said she wanted to be a writer from the age of seventeen, but it took time to stop thinking about it and actually do it. In June 2013 she published Take a Breath, and a second book followed that November. That was the point where the dream turned into a real body of work.
She learned fast.
Roberts has been open about making rookie mistakes early on, including putting work out before it had been properly edited. Instead of hiding that, she used it. She read more, learned more, and kept improving. There is something very practical about that part of her story. No grand myth, just work, correction, and more work.
Most of her novels sit somewhere inside romance, but they nearly always bring suspense with them. She likes obsession, taboo attraction, stalkers, secrets, and the kind of twists that make a reader stop and rethink what just happened. She has said she loves it when readers do not see a turn coming. That appetite for surprise runs through a lot of what she writes.
You can see it in Deviant and Redemption, which take a dark, obsessive setup and keep pushing it until the emotional damage really shows. You can see it again in Siren, a book many readers point to when they talk about her darkest work, largely because of Scarlet, its hard-edged heroine. Then there is Her Guardians, which folds the paranormal into romance, and Headmaster, which turns a forbidden setup into something more tender and bruised.
She is happy to swerve.
Not every Roberts book lives at the bleakest end of the shelf. One Wish shows a much softer side, with a more openly dreamy, romantic premise. That range matters. Even when the tone changes, her stories still tend to center people under pressure, people with bad timing, buried hurt, or both. She likes testing what love looks like when life gets complicated fast.
She has also said that many of her ideas come from dreams, which tracks once you look at her plots. A Roberts premise often starts with one sharp, slightly unreal idea and then follows it with total seriousness. A dangerous stranger. A psychic gift. A wish that goes too far. However different the books seem, they usually begin by knocking a character off balance.
Off the page, she sounds grounded. She has talked about the simple rush of finishing a book, the value of reader feedback, and the fact that coffee is the best companion to a writing session. She has also visited the United States several times, and some of her settings draw on places she knows through family and travel. She still seems closely tied to Gibraltar, the place where her adult life settled. On the page, though, she likes mess. She likes trouble. And she likes seeing what her characters do when there is no tidy way out.
