On the surface, the shelter looks like a rescue operation for animals that need homes. Underneath that, it also serves as a hiding place for people who are in real trouble and need protection.

That double purpose gives the series its engine.

Every book has the emotional pull of rescue work, but the suspense stakes are higher because the people arriving at the shelter may be fleeing stalkers, violent exes, criminals, or other threats that do not stay politely off the page. The setting lets Johnston write about secrecy in a very practical way. Characters are not just hiding feelings. They may be hiding names, histories, children, or active danger.
