That is the hook, but the series works because Kendra is more than a gimmick.

She is smart, practical, stressed, funny in a dry way, and very aware that she is not actually trained for any of this. Her legal background gives the books structure and texture. Kendra moves through upscale neighborhoods, apartment buildings, legal offices, reality-show chaos, and the general messiness of a big city. Her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Lexie, gives the series warmth, and Johnston's affection for animals is never fake or decorative.

Each book builds a case around a different animal angle, ferrets, birds, cats, iguanas, pigs, dogs. That gives the series an easy rhythm without making the books feel copied from one another. The real through line is Kendra's effort to rebuild her life while staying ahead of the danger that keeps landing on her doorstep.

Romance is part of the package, but the mysteries stay in front.

If you want a pet-centered cozy series with a professional heroine, a legal twist, and a city setting, Kendra Ballantyne is a very solid place to start. The books are brisk, clue-driven, and easy to read in order, but they also have enough ongoing character life to reward sticking with Kendra from the beginning.
