The mysteries stay grounded in everyday life, which makes the killings feel disruptive in the right cozy-mystery way.

Carrie is a practical sleuth. She is not chasing danger because she loves the thrill. She gets involved because the case has landed too close to her work, her friends, or her future. That makes the series easy to settle into. It also helps that Johnston clearly enjoys the routines of the setting, baking, animal care, local events, and the steady work of keeping a business alive.

There is warmth here.

But there is enough tension to keep the books from turning sleepy. If you like small-town mysteries with dogs, food, and a heroine who has one foot in pet health and the other in community drama, Barkery & Biscuits is probably Johnston's coziest series.
