Series background & context

Alpha Force is Linda O Johnston's paranormal romantic suspense series about a secret military unit made up largely of shapeshifters. Most of the operatives are wolves, but the wider team includes other paranormal members too, which gives the series a fun built-in variety without changing its core feel.

The setup is simple and sturdy. Alpha Force gets called in when a case is too strange, too dangerous, or too sensitive for ordinary channels.

That means the books mix romance with covert missions, military structure, and a steady run of investigations. One story may revolve around stolen biological material, another around kidnappings, another around rumors leaking online, and another around violence aimed at real wolves in the wild. Johnston keeps the external plots moving, but she always ties them to a couple who have to learn how to trust each other while at least one huge secret is still on the table.

The series begins with Alpha Wolf, where a veterinarian in rural Maryland gets dragged into werewolf rumors that turn out to be very real. Alaskan Wolf shifts the action to a remote glacier setting. Guardian Wolf and Undercover Wolf lean harder into the team's internal world and the consequences of belonging to it. Later books like Canadian Wolf, Protector Wolf, and Visionary Wolf keep expanding the reach of the unit while holding onto the same mix of danger and desire.

The tone is much closer to romantic suspense than to big fantasy. These are fast, plot-driven books with shapeshifters, not giant worldbuilding epics. The paranormal element matters, but it is usually woven into practical problems like cover identities, scientific experiments, cross-border cooperation, missing people, or threats that could expose the entire team.

Animals matter here, too.

That is part of Johnston's style across genres, and Alpha Force is no exception. Even with secret soldiers and full-moon complications, there is usually a strong sense that the natural world is worth protecting, and that being part animal does not make these characters less human.

If you like your romance with missions, hidden identities, and a supernatural edge, this series delivers exactly that. The books work on their own because each one centers a new couple, but reading in order gives you the best sense of how the team grows, changes, and keeps pulling new people into its secret world.
