It is a strong opener because it gives you the world at the same speed Carrow gets it, fast, dangerous, and impossible to ignore.

Carrow works well as a lead because she is not trying to become a chosen one or a queen. She is trying not to go to jail for a murder she did not commit. That keeps the stakes grounded even while the world gets weirder around her. Once she ends up in Guild City, the series has plenty to play with, magical guilds, vampire power, witch parties, and a city that rewards nerve almost as much as power.

He is the vampire at the center of Carrow's trouble, and the series knows exactly how to use him. He is frightening, sexy, powerful, and not at all a safe person to need.
