The Bell Witches
by Lindsey Kelk
2024
After her father’s death, sixteen-year-old Emily is sent to live with the Bell women in Savannah, Georgia, in a beautiful, eerie house full of rules. As she uncovers her family’s witchcraft and falls for enigmatic Wyn, Emily must choose which bonds she can trust.
Series background & context
The Savannah Red series opens with The Bell Witches, a gothic‑tinged YA fantasy that swaps big‑city romcom settings for humid Southern streets and a crumbling family house. Sixteen‑year‑old Emily’s life is shattered when her father dies, and she’s sent to live with relatives she barely knows in Savannah, Georgia.
Her new home is the Bell family mansion, a place that feels beautiful and unsettling in equal measure. Emily’s glamorous aunt and formidable grandmother lay down strict rules, neighbours whisper about the family, and there are doors she’s told never to open. Grief makes everything feel even stranger, and she is sure there are things everyone else knows but won’t explain.
As the story unfolds, Emily discovers that the Bells are witches bound up in a legacy that stretches back generations. Magic hums through the house and the city, bringing temptation as well as danger. Being a Bell comes with power, expectations and a history of choices that haven’t always ended well.
Complicating everything is Wyn, the mysterious boy Emily is drawn to almost from the moment she arrives. Their connection is intense and immediate, but every step closer to him seems to pull her further away from the family who have taken her in and the rules that are supposed to keep them all safe.
The book balances secrets, slow‑burn romance and spooky atmosphere with flashes of Kelk’s trademark humour. Family dinners, school corridors and walks through moss‑draped squares feel as vivid as the magical rituals. At its heart, the series is about grief, belonging and how far you’ll go to decide your own future when everyone else thinks they know what’s best.
The Bell Witches is planned as the first in a trilogy, so Savannah Red is a world readers can settle into over several books as Emily uncovers more of the Bell family’s past and what it means for her.
