Savage Lands

by Stacey Marie Brown

2020

Twenty years after the Fae Wars shattered the barrier between worlds, privileged human Brexley is thrown into Halálház, a brutal prison where humans are prey. To stay alive she must ally with Warwick Farkas, a legendary fae killer whose cruelty matches his allure, in a place where every game is life or death.

Series background & context

Savage Lands drops readers into a brutal world two decades after the barrier between Earth and the Otherworld fell in the Fae Wars. The story centers on Budapest, a city split between elite fae and privileged humans, where prejudice simmers into open violence and power is held by those ruthless enough to take it.

Brexley has grown up on the human side of the wall, raised in privilege by General Markos after being orphaned. Her life is full of political games and quiet heartbreak, but she still believes she understands the rules of her world. One night shatters that illusion and lands her in Halálház, the most feared prison in the east, known as the House of Death.

Inside Halálház, humans sit at the bottom of a vicious hierarchy. To survive, Brexley has to navigate gangs, monsters, and sadistic guards, all while keeping hold of who she is. There she meets Warwick Farkas, the legendary fae warrior whose name is spoken like a curse. He is arrogant, violent, and terrifying, yet their unwanted connection becomes a lifeline and a source of constant danger.

The early books, starting with Savage Lands and Wild Lands, blend high‑stakes prison survival with a slow‑burn, enemies‑to‑lovers romance and the unraveling of massive conspiracies. As the series moves into Dead Lands and Bad Lands, the world expands into rebel territories, shadowy political circles, and a growing obsession with the Nectar, a magical substance whose power could alter the balance between humans and fae.

Later installments, Blood Lands and Shadow Lands, push Brexley and her allies to the edge as they confront new prisons, wars across Eastern Europe, and the ugly fallout of every bargain they have made. Side characters who started as background muscle or comic relief gain depth and their own arcs, setting the stage for Land of Ashes and Land of Monsters.

Those final books shift some focus to Ash and to Raven, a princess with monsters in her blood, showing the long shadow the Fae Wars and the Nectar have cast over the next generation. Political power games, revenge quests, and questions about who the real monsters are all come to a head.

Savage Lands is darker and more violent than Brown’s earlier fae books, filled with torture chambers, gladiator‑style games, and corrupt rulers, but it still carries her trademarks: sharp humor, found family, and romances that grow in the unlikeliest soil.
