Zoey Daniels survives the foster system by being tough and keeping her world small, until a last‑chance placement gives her a disabled sister to protect and a secret government job capturing fae. When a magical storm levels Seattle, she is forced to trust a furious Wanderer named Ryker and question everything DMG has ever taught her about monsters and humanity.

4

Across the Divide

by Stacey Marie Brown

2015

Ryker’s powers are killing him, Zoey is becoming more fae than human, and a ruthless demon has sold her back to DMG. Imprisoned and reprogrammed as a weapon, she must play the perfect soldier while secretly fighting for the people she loves, even if it means sacrificing someone to keep another alive.

Series background & context

The Collector series shifts Stacey Marie Brown’s fae universe into a grittier, post‑disaster urban fantasy, following Zoey Daniels, a tough foster‑system survivor who can see what most humans cannot. Zoey’s rare sight lets her see the fae who move unnoticed through the human world.

That ability lands her a job at the secretive Department of Molecular Genetics, better known as DMG. There she is trained as a Collector, hunting, trapping, and helping dissect fae so their magic can be turned into cures and enhancements for humans. To Zoey, raised on DMG’s stories, the fae are monsters and her work is necessary, even noble.

Everything fractures when a catastrophic electrical storm devastates Seattle and exposes just how entangled Zoey is with the very creatures she hunts. In City in Embers she is forced into an uneasy alliance with Ryker, a dangerous Wanderer whose hatred of humans matches her disgust for fae. Their reluctant partnership pulls her out of DMG’s controlled halls and into ruined streets, roadside motels, and hidden pockets of the Otherworld.

As the series continues through The Barrier Between and Across the Divide, Zoey learns she is not simply a human employee but a long‑running DMG experiment. Her own body carries fatal flaws tied to stolen magic, and the agency she trusted has been lying about its work on fae, humans, and animals. The journey takes Zoey, Ryker, and their honey‑addicted sprite companion Sprig from storm‑torn Seattle into South American rainforests, secret labs, and brutal prisons.

The final book, From Burning Ashes, raises the stakes from survival to open war. Dr. Rapava’s obsession with building super‑soldiers out of fae blood collides with the schemes of demons like Vadik and the pull of ancient artifacts such as the Stone of Destiny. Zoey has to decide how far she is willing to go, and who she is willing to bargain with, to protect the people she loves.

Expect a fast pace, sharp banter, road‑trip chaos, and a slow‑burn romance wrapped inside conspiracy and dark experiments. The Collector series ties directly into the Darkness and Lightness Saga books, so readers who enjoy spotting cross‑over characters and long‑running mysteries will find plenty to dig into here.
