Author bio
Sarina Bowen did not take the straightest path into fiction. She studied economics at Yale, graduated magna cum laude, and then spent time working as a derivatives trader on Wall Street before turning to writing full time. That earlier career still leaves a mark on her novels. Even when the setup is deeply romantic, her books usually understand work, ambition, money, pressure, and the way adults build a life.
She also writes like someone who knows cold weather for real.
Bowen describes herself as a New Englander with Vermont roots, and a lot of her stories feel grounded in that landscape. Her books return again and again to hockey rinks, ski mountains, orchards, farm roads, college campuses, and small towns where winter is not just scenery. The setting matters. It shapes the mood, the jobs, and the choices her characters have to make.
Her writing career took patience. Before romance became her home base, she wrote other kinds of novels and spent years figuring out what kind of stories she most wanted to tell. When she did settle into contemporary romance, readers responded quickly. The emotional directness was there. So was the humor. And so was her knack for making people feel like they had lives outside the love story.
Then things clicked.
Books like The Year We Fell Down, Bittersweet, Him, and Brooklynaire helped define what readers now expect from a Sarina Bowen novel. There is usually strong chemistry, yes, but also a sense that the characters have to earn their way toward each other. Her hockey romances are fast and fun, but they are rarely lightweight. Her Vermont books are cozy in some ways, yet they still make room for grief, recovery, addiction, shame, family strain, and second chances.
She has range, but she likes connection.
That shows in the kinds of people she writes. Bowen's leads include hockey players, farmers, musicians, assistants, single parents, ex-cons, students, and survivors trying to rebuild after injury or loss. She has also written many queer love stories that readers return to again and again, especially Him, Us, Roommate, and the Hockey Guys books. Across all of them, the through line is pretty simple: damaged people trying to tell the truth, sometimes awkwardly, sometimes late, but eventually with their whole hearts.
Collaboration has been an important part of her catalog, too. Her books with Elle Kennedy, especially Him, Us, Good Boy, Stay, and Top Secret, brought even more readers into her world. Later collaborations with Lauren Blakely, Sarah Mayberry, Tanya Eby, Rebecca Yarros, and Devney Perry show another side of her work, one that can lean more rom-com, more glossy, or more ensemble-driven without losing the emotional pull.
These days, Bowen lives with her family on wooded acreage in New Hampshire. Her books are published in many languages, and she also serves in author advocacy work through the Authors Guild and anti-book-ban efforts. That combination feels fitting. Her fiction may be built around falling in love, but the books themselves are sturdy, practical, and full of people trying to make a real life work.
