Series background & context

Sarina Bowen's Brooklyn books all live in the same larger hockey world, and that shared setting is a big part of the fun. The earlier Brooklyn Bruisers novels follow one season of a brand-new NHL team as players, staff, and team insiders keep colliding on and off the ice. Then the world widens in the later Brooklyn Hockey books, where the cast grows, the web of friendships gets messier, and the romance setups become even more varied.

This is sports romance, but the rink is only half the story.

The books move through front offices, training rooms, luxury boxes, apartments, bars, team buses, and very public New York moments where private feelings refuse to stay private. Some couples are dealing with old heartbreak. Some are trying to stay professional. Some fall into secret relationships, fake relationships, accidental marriages, or situations that looked easy for about five minutes. The hockey schedule keeps the stories moving, but the real engine is always the people around the team.

That is what gives the series its shape. You meet players, owners, assistants, publicists, massage therapists, interns, agents, singers, and even women's league stars, and they all make the world feel busy and lived in. A side character in one book can become the emotional center of the next. If you read in order, you get the extra payoff of seeing relationships build in the background before they move to the front.

The tone is lively, sexy, and funny, but not flimsy. Bowen is good at banter, and she is also good at work details, which means these books usually know what everyone is supposed to be doing when they are not kissing. Media pressure, rehab, trades, public image, family baggage, and the plain exhaustion of pro sports all have a place here. Even the lighter books tend to have a practical backbone.

If you like connected romance worlds where the team starts to feel familiar, Brooklyn is very easy to sink into. The books can usually stand alone, but together they build a bigger picture of ambition, friendship, and what it costs to let someone see the part of you that is not performing for the crowd.
