Series background & context

The Him books are built on history. Jamie Canning and Ryan Wesley are not starting from zero when the story opens. They already share years of friendship, hockey memories, and one night at camp that changed everything before either of them was ready to deal with it. That gives the series its emotional charge right away. Every conversation comes with baggage, and every quiet moment feels like something overdue.

At first, this is a reunion story.

Jamie wants to understand why Wes vanished on him. Wes wants another chance and knows he probably does not deserve an easy one. When the two end up back at hockey camp as adults, the books get to work through what made them matter to each other in the first place. The pull is not only attraction. It is trust, familiarity, and the fear of ruining the one connection that has never fully gone away.

Then the story refuses to stop at the first big romantic payoff. Us moves Jamie and Wes into pro hockey, public scrutiny, and the practical problem of building a life together when one of them is a visible athlete and the world is very interested in what that means. Epic comes in as a shorter later chapter, but it still fits the core design of the series, which is to keep asking what love looks like after the confession, after the reunion, and after the easy fantasy should have kicked in.

That is why the books stick with readers. They are hot and funny, yes, but they also let the relationship keep evolving. The couple does not disappear into a happy ending and call it a day. Work, family, media attention, distance, and ambition continue to matter.

The tone is warm, fast, and emotionally open once the walls start coming down. There is a lot of hockey here, but the real sport is honesty. If you like friends-to-lovers romance with real history and a couple who has to keep choosing each other, Him is easy to recommend.
