Author bio

Samira Ahmed was born in Bombay, India, and grew up in Batavia, Illinois. Her childhood home, she has said, was full of the smells of fried onions, spices, and potpourri. Those sensory details fit the way her books often make family life feel immediate, busy, funny, and deeply felt.

She graduated from the University of Chicago, then built a career in education before her fiction reached bookstores. Ahmed taught high school English in the Chicago suburbs and New York City, worked for education nonprofits, and spent time on political campaigns. Her work has also included poetry, essays, and short stories.

Then, in 2018, she made her young adult fiction debut with Love, Hate & Other Filters.

The novel follows Maya Aziz, a Muslim Indian American teenager outside Chicago who wants to study film in New York while her parents have a more traditional plan in mind. Ahmed brings together first love, family expectations, friendship, and the ugly speed with which Islamophobia can change a community. It set the pattern for books that are personal in scale but unafraid to look at larger systems.

Her next novel, Internment, shifts into near-future dystopia. Seventeen-year-old Layla Amin is forced into an internment camp for Muslim Americans, then begins to resist the people who expect her to stay quiet. The book became a New York Times bestseller, and its story of fear, complicity, and collective action has made it a frequent choice for readers looking for fiction that starts conversations.

Ahmed also likes a good mystery. In Mad, Bad & Dangerous to Know, she sends art-loving Khayyam Maquet through Paris on the trail of a lost painting and a hidden historical story. Hollow Fires follows aspiring journalist Safiya Mirza as she investigates the murder of a boy who was cruelly reduced to a racist label. Both books ask who gets remembered, who gets believed, and what it takes to keep looking when the truth is inconvenient.

The stakes are personal.

With This Book Won't Burn, Ahmed turns to book banning and student activism through Noor Khan, a teenager who finds herself unable to ignore what is happening at her new school. Her middle-grade Amira & Hamza books take a lighter but still lively route, pairing Chicago siblings with jinn, ancient astronomy, and a dangerous journey through the magical world of Qaf. She also wrote the Ms. Marvel: Beyond the Limit miniseries, bringing Kamala Khan into a fast-moving story of interdimensional trouble, a copycat hero, and a Bollywood-flavored alternate reality.

More recently, The Singular Life of Aria Patel follows a science-minded teen slipping through parallel universes while trying to understand love, family, and the life she wants. Across contemporary realism, fantasy, comics, and speculative fiction, Ahmed returns to young people who are pushed to speak up and decide what kind of world they want to live in.

Ahmed lives in the Midwest. When she is not reading or writing, she is still on the lookout for the perfect pastry.
