Author bio
Katie McGarry grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and Kentucky still feels baked into the bones of a lot of her fiction. She studied political science in college and once imagined a future in family court, but stories kept pulling at her long before publishing became part of the plan.
She has said she was always a storyteller.
In high school, an English assignment turned into something much bigger when she kept writing until it became a full play. A teacher looked her in the eye and told her she had talent and should pursue writing. McGarry did not quite believe it then. She has talked openly about how writing felt like something for people more special than she was, so she pushed that dream aside, even though the moment stayed with her.
She did not seriously try to write a novel until her early thirties. By then she was a stay-at-home mom with three children, and when her youngest finally started sleeping through the night, she began writing in the quiet hours. She joined her local Romance Writers of America chapter, learned how the business worked, wrote a manuscript that taught her a lot, and then started over with a new project. That project became Pushing the Limits.
When Pushing the Limits arrived in 2012, it introduced readers to Echo Emerson and Noah Hutchins, two teens carrying more pain than most adults around them can see. The book won awards and gave McGarry the kind of breakout start many writers hope for. More importantly, it showed what she does especially well: emotionally intense romance, damaged but believable characters, and stories that take hard subjects seriously without giving up on hope.
Then she kept going, often by following the side characters who refused to stay on the sidelines. Books like Dare You To, Crash into You, and Take Me On turned the wider cast into a connected world of their own. Readers tend to come for the chemistry, but they stay for the loyalty, the vulnerability, and the way McGarry writes teens who are dealing with class pressure, family chaos, foster care, grief, addiction, and the long aftershocks of trauma.
She was a teenager during the age of grunge and boy bands, and she has said those years were both the best and worst of her life.
That perspective helps explain why her younger characters rarely feel talked down to. In the Thunder Road books, beginning with Nowhere But Here, she moved into the world of a Kentucky motorcycle club and built stories around loyalty, danger, and found family. In Only a Breath Apart and Echoes Between Us, she added a more paranormal edge, mixing contemporary romance with curses, visions, ghosts, illness, and old heartbreak. Later, with Say You'll Remember Me and the Witches of the Island books, including A Wicked and Beautiful Garden, she widened her range without losing the emotional core readers expect from her.
These are not neat lives.
McGarry still lives in Kentucky with her husband and three children. She has described herself as a lover of music, happy endings, reality television, and University of Kentucky basketball. That mix says a lot about her books, too. They can get messy, loud, bruised, and very emotional, but she keeps making room for tenderness, humor, and the stubborn idea that people can build something better than the life they started with.
