Author bio
Suzanne Brockmann was born in 1960 and grew up in New Jersey, a reader who loved adventure, series fiction, and World War II history. Those interests never really left her. You can still feel them in her books, especially in the way she writes loyalty, danger, teamwork, and people trying to do the right thing under pressure.
After high school, she attended Boston University's School of Broadcasting and Film, majoring in film with a minor in creative writing. She did not stay to graduate. Instead, she dropped out, sang lead in a rock band, got married, and started building a family.
The writing came later.
Once her daughter Melanie and son Jason were born, Brockmann began writing seriously. She worked on screenplays and TV scripts, and even tried writing Star Trek novels, before deciding in 1992 to aim squarely at genre fiction. She read deeply in romance, sat down at the keyboard, and wrote fast. The fourth manuscript she finished sold first and became Future Perfect, published in 1993.
A few years later she found the part of the genre that fit her best. Prince Joe launched the Tall, Dark & Dangerous books in 1996, bringing Navy SEALs, sharp banter, and real emotional stakes into the center of the story. Then The Unsung Hero kicked off the Troubleshooters series in 2000 and widened the canvas even more, adding FBI agents, counterterror cases, and a big recurring cast that readers could follow across book after book.
Her novels are full of action, but that is not the whole draw. Readers come back for the team feeling, the long friendships, and the way Brockmann lets tough, capable people be funny, stubborn, frightened, loyal, and deeply romantic all at once. Books like Over the Edge, Hot Target, All Through the Night, and Born to Darkness show how comfortably she moves from military suspense to ensemble drama to paranormal territory without losing the emotional core.
She also helped push mainstream romance in more inclusive directions.
One of the clearest examples is Jules Cassidy, her openly gay FBI agent, whose long arc became one of the emotional backbones of the Troubleshooters world. Brockmann has written openly about being the mother of a gay son, and she dedicated Hot Target to Jason. She later gave Jules his own hard-won happy ending in All Through the Night, and donated her earnings from that book to MassEquality.
The awards followed, but the bigger story is staying power. Brockmann became a regular presence on bestseller lists, won two RITA Awards, and received the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. She has also kept branching out, co-writing the YA paranormal Night Sky books with her daughter Melanie and working with her husband, author and screenwriter Ed Gaffney, on LGBTQ+ indie film and TV projects.
Family runs through a lot of what she does.
In recent years, she has continued writing while also producing work for the screen. Her official pages still reflect the same mix that shaped her fiction from the start, a love of military history, real respect for service, impatience with bigotry, and a belief that romance can be exciting, inclusive, funny, and emotionally serious all at once. That blend is a big part of why her books still hold together so well, whether you start with an early category romance or jump straight into the SEAL-heavy suspense novels.
