S W Perry Books in Order

S W Perry came to fiction after two full working lives, first in broadcasting, then in aviation. He began in journalism in 1977, joining Radio 210 as a trainee news reporter, and from there moved into the fast, practical world of British commercial radio.

He went on to work at LBC and Independent Radio News, presenting programmes and reading bulletins, and he was part of the IRN team that covered the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. He also spent six years as head of news for a commercial radio station. That early background still feels close to his fiction. His books have the pace of a reporter chasing a lead and the habit of noticing how institutions, from courts to churches, shape everyday life.

Then flying took over. In the early 1980s he earned his pilot's licence, flew a vintage Tiger Moth, and even handled traffic spotting flights for Essex Radio. After gaining his commercial rating, he left broadcasting behind and spent about thirty years flying for a living, eventually becoming a senior captain with a major UK leisure airline.

That is not the usual route into historical crime fiction.

When Perry turned to novels, he brought both careers with him. The reporter's eye shows up in the detail, and the pilot's steadiness shows up in the way even complicated plots stay clear. His debut, The Angel's Mark, introduced readers to Nicholas Shelby, a young physician in Elizabethan London whose curiosity about a child's death draws him into murder, conspiracy, and the dangerous orbit of Robert Cecil.

The books that followed, including The Serpent's Mark, The Saracen's Mark, The Heretic's Mark, and The Sinner's Mark, keep widening that world. Readers who enjoy Perry tend to come for the mystery and stay for the atmosphere: the filthy river stairs, the crowded taverns, the uneasy mix of old medicine and new thinking, and the growing partnership between Nicholas and Bianca Merton, the healer and tavern keeper who becomes just as important to the series as the doctor himself.

He has written that the Elizabethan era fascinates him because it was a society living under the threat of religious and territorial destruction, while also standing on the edge of scientific and intellectual change. That tension runs through his fiction. Nicholas is always caught between what the old authorities insist is true and what observation, experience, and common sense tell him instead. Bianca, with her herbal knowledge and sharp instincts, pushes that tension in a different direction.

The past, for Perry, is never a museum display.

That may be why his version of Tudor England feels so lived in. Bankside, the unruly south bank of the Thames where much of the Nicholas Shelby series begins, is full of playhouses, taverns, river traffic, vice, fear, and opportunity. Even when the later books travel farther afield, the stories stay close to the lives of working people, the poor, the sick, and the outsiders who usually vanish into the background of grand history.

His work on the Nicholas Shelby novels brought early recognition. The Angel's Mark was recognized by the Crime Writers' Association Historical Dagger and was named a Walter Scott Prize Academy Recommended Read in 2019. Perry lives in rural Worcestershire with his wife Jane and a cocker spaniel called Buffle, and when he is not writing he has said he likes spending time with Shakespeare, often at the theatre in nearby Stratford-upon-Avon. That fondness fits the books well. They are steeped in the feel of late sixteenth-century London, but they never forget that history was lived by ordinary people as much as by queens and courtiers.
